Photos of French Carpenters' West Coast Trip

We are running photos of our French carpenter friends Menthe and Yogan documenting the trip they took this summer along the Northern Pacific Coast, exchanging their carpentry skills for room and board.

This is a tiny home they built in 10 days on an old Dodge flatbed truck in Humboldt County, California.

We are posting one of their projects each day for a week here: https://www.theshelterblog.com/

Why I'm a Publisher -- 3 Minute LK Interview By Yuichi Takeuchi

Last April, I was visited by Yuichi Takeuchi, an artist, carpenter and treehouse builder from Japan.

Yuichi said he’d been heavily inspired by our book Shelter. He was making a movie called Simplife and wanted to interview me.

Here’s the result, 3 minutes long. In the last part, I say, “I like to tell people what I see going on in the world…” Yeah!

I’ve had a lot of Japanese people come here — media, builders, artists, publishers —  in recent years and they’ve all been wonderful — kindred spirits of the Pacific Ocean.

French Carpenters Stop by Shelter On Their Way Home

Yogan and Menthé, carpenters from France, who have been featured in out last two books, stopped by here yesterday on their way home. They have spent the last 3 months hitchhiking and working on the west coast (Northern California up to Orcas Island). Kindred spirits, these two have had a wonderful time, working with a variety of people, trading work for room and board.

We’ll be posting photos of their projects in the near future.

Outdoor Bath House of Cedar and Cypress in Georgia Woods

“Hey Lloyd! This is Frank the traveling carpenter from page 92 of Tiny Homes on the Move. My brother & I just got back from southern Georgia after building an outdoor bath house in the beautiful forest there. The building is made of locally milled cypress & western red cedar from your neck of the woods. The front door, triangular window, & privacy screens were all salvaged materials from the property that were modified to fit the style of the building.…I am always traveling for jobs in my tiny house & can be reached at the below email address should anyone have any unique projects that need some helping hands. Hope all is well out west!”

French Carpenter Seeking Work In California/Oregon/Washington This Summer

Yogan is an accomplished timber framer (and treehouse builder) from France. His work has appeared in our last two books. He will be traveling along the west coast this summer and wants to hook up with builders, home owners, homesteaders, and/or people of like interests. He’s open to any kind of arrangement, including working for room and/or board.

You can check out his work here: yogan.over-blog.com

From Yogan:
Hi friend builders, carpenters, inventors…

I’m Yogan, a carpenter of south west france,

I’m coming in August, September and October to walk on the west coast, from California to Seattle. My goal is to meet, visit, help, places and peoples where there are amazing shelters, cabins—in the woods if possible.
If I could find a community of carpenters living in cabins in the forest,  it would be perfect!
I’d also like to go to any carpenter or timber framers’ meetings.
I will be hitchhiking frequently with my backpack and accordion! You can email me at: Yogan Carpenter <yogancarpenter@gmail.com>
