Tiny House Movement Coming to Minnesota

“The “tiny house’ movement is catching on in communities around the country, including Seattle, New York and even Madison, Wisconsin. And now Brainerd is moving in that direction as well.

The Brainerd City Council on Monday approved the idea of allowing very small houses to be built on some small vacant lots in the city, the Brainerd Dispatch reports. The council asked for some changes in the proposed ordinance, and it will consider final approval of the measure next month.

Tiny houses – typically 400 square feet or less – are being promoted as a way to provide less expensive and more energy-efficient housing.  The smallest of the tiny houses are often built on trailers, so they can be easily moved from one location to another.…”

Didn't know where else to post this (not to tech sav vy, adverse to Facebook). Caught some of CNN 60's show re: bomb shelters. "8 1/2' x 12' with plenty of storage" (happy family within). Maybe there is something we can learn from this. Something else has been gnawing at me: While I'm 100% behind small homes and living within our means(and I mean within all of our means- we are all in this together) I feel something has been left out of the conversation. Are small/tiny homes in some way a last ditch attempt at home ownership in our two-tiered society?

  2. I do like the idea of the tiny house. However, we had a brutal winter this last year and living in a house this size would take the concept of "cabin fever" to a whole new level.
