  4. I wonder if it even has a propulsion system. I suppose it could be simply moored there as an inexpensive way to live on the river. Anyway, we will likely never know for sure.

    These river houseboats were commonly called shantyboats. For a wonderful description of river life on a shantyboat, I highly recommend reading Harlan Hubbard's book "Shantyboat."
